How to decipher a unit model number to determine the size.
Nominal Sizes and designations are:
2.0 Ton = 24,000 BTU = 24 or 024
2.5 Ton = 30,000 BTU = 30 or 030
3.0 Ton = 36,000 BTU = 36 or 036
3.5 Ton = 42,000 BTU = 42 or 042
4.0 Ton = 48,000 BTU = 48 or 048
5.0 Ton = 60,000 BTU = 60 or 060
It usually has the size coded into the model number.
Here are some examples of 3 ton units from different manufacturers. They all use 36 as he identifier.

Find the model number on the existing outside unit. And compare to the info above.
